GST calculation is one of those things that seems simple until you actually sit down to do it. You have a bill, you need to figure out how much is GST, or you have a GST-inclusive price and need to extract the base amount. The math is straightforward, but doing it correctly every time especially with CGST/SGST splits is where people make mistakes.

I have used GST calculators for years, both for personal purchases and business invoicing. The biggest problem is not the calculation itself it is knowing which formula to use. Adding GST is different from removing GST. Intra-state transactions are different from inter-state. And the GST rate matters more than you think because the wrong rate means the wrong tax amount.

In this guide, I will walk you through every aspect of GST calculation: the formulas, the rates, the CGST/SGST/IGST breakdown, real-world examples, and common mistakes to avoid. Whether you are a business owner, accountant, student, or just someone who wants to understand their bill better, by the end you will be able to calculate GST accurately in any situation.

What Is GST

Understanding the basics of Goods and Services Tax before diving into calculations.

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple indirect taxes like excise duty, service tax, VAT, and others with a single unified tax. GST is a destination-based tax, meaning it is collected at the point of consumption, not production.

Every product and service in India is assigned a GST rate by the GST Council. These rates fall into four main slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Some essential items like fresh vegetables, milk, and education services are exempt from GST (0% rate). The rate depends on the category of goods or services.

CGST (Central GST)

Collected by the Central Government. Applies to intra-state transactions. Always 50% of the total GST rate.

SGST (State GST)

Collected by the State Government. Applies to intra-state transactions. Always 50% of the total GST rate.

IGST (Integrated GST)

Collected by the Central Government for inter-state transactions. The full GST rate is charged as IGST.

GST Rates in India

The four standard GST slabs and what falls under each one.

5%
Essential Goods
Packaged food, footwear under Rs 1000, fuel, transport
12%
Standard Goods
Processed food, business class air tickets, garments over Rs 1000
18%
Most Goods & Services
Electronics, restaurants, IT services, financial services, hotels
28%
Luxury Items
Cars, tobacco, aerated drinks, cement, ACs, movie tickets

Pro Tip: Not sure which rate applies to your product? Check the GST rate finder on gst.gov.in. The rate depends on the HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code for goods or SAC (Services Accounting Code) for services. Most common items fall under 18%.

How to Add GST

Adding GST to a base amount to get the final price.

When you have the base price (price without GST) and need to calculate the final price with GST, use this formula:

GST Amount = Base Amount x GST Rate / 100
Total Price = Base Amount + GST Amount

Example: You are selling a product for Rs 5,000 (base price) and the GST rate is 18%.

GST Amount = 5000 x 18 / 100 = Rs 900

Total Price = 5000 + 900 = Rs 5,900

For intra-state: CGST = Rs 450, SGST = Rs 450

For inter-state: IGST = Rs 900

When to use Add GST: You are creating an invoice, quoting a price to a customer, or calculating the MRP of a product. The base price is your revenue, and GST is collected on behalf of the government.

How to Remove GST

Extracting the base price from a GST-inclusive amount.

When you have the GST-inclusive price (final price) and need to find the base price and GST amount, use this formula:

Base Price = GST-Inclusive Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
GST Amount = Inclusive Price - Base Price

Example: You received a bill for Rs 11,800 (including 18% GST) and need to find the base price.

Base Price = 11800 / (1 + 18/100) = 11800 / 1.18 = Rs 10,000

GST Amount = 11800 - 10000 = Rs 1,800

Verification: 10000 x 18/100 = 1800. 10000 + 1800 = 11800. Correct.

When to use Remove GST: You have a bill or invoice with a GST-inclusive amount and want to know how much is the actual product cost versus the tax. Common when reviewing expenses, filing returns, or comparing prices.

Warning: Do not just subtract the GST percentage from the inclusive price. That gives the wrong answer. For example, 11800 - 18% = 11800 - 2124 = 9676, which is wrong. The correct base price is 10000. Always use the division formula for removing GST.

CGST, SGST, and IGST

Understanding when to use which type of GST.

The type of GST depends on whether the transaction is within the same state (intra-state) or between two different states (inter-state).

Intra-State (Same State)

When buyer and seller are in the same state, GST is split equally:

CGST = Total GST / 2

SGST = Total GST / 2

Example: 18% GST

CGST = 9%, SGST = 9%

Inter-State (Different States)

When buyer and seller are in different states, full GST is charged as IGST:

IGST = Total GST Rate

Example: 18% GST

IGST = 18%

Quick Reference: For 18% GST, intra-state gives CGST 9% + SGST 9%. Inter-state gives IGST 18%. The total tax amount is the same in both cases. The difference is which government receives the tax.

Real-World Examples

Practical GST calculations you will encounter in everyday life.

01

Restaurant Bill (Add GST)

Your food order costs Rs 800 (base price). Restaurant GST rate is 5% for non-AC restaurants.

GST = 800 x 5/100 = Rs 40

Total = 800 + 40 = Rs 840

CGST = Rs 20, SGST = Rs 20

02

Electronics Purchase (Remove GST)

You bought a phone for Rs 29,500 (including 18% GST). Find the base price.

Base = 29500 / 1.18 = Rs 25,000

GST = 29500 - 25000 = Rs 4,500

CGST = Rs 2,250, SGST = Rs 2,250

03

Inter-State Software Purchase (IGST)

A company in Maharashtra buys software from a vendor in Karnataka for Rs 50,000 (18% GST).

GST = 50000 x 18/100 = Rs 9,000

Total = 50000 + 9000 = Rs 59,000

IGST = Rs 9,000 (no CGST/SGST split)

Using the Calculator

Step-by-step guide to using the AFFLIGO GST Calculator.

01

Choose Add or Remove GST

Toggle the mode switch. Add GST calculates the total from a base price. Remove GST extracts the base price from an inclusive amount.

02

Enter the Amount

Type the amount in the input field. For Add mode, enter the base price. For Remove mode, enter the GST-inclusive price.

03

Select GST Rate

Pick from the standard rates: 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%. Or select Custom and enter any percentage (useful for special GST rates).

04

Choose Tax Type

Select Intra-state for CGST + SGST split, or Inter-state for IGST. The result updates instantly with the correct breakdown.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these errors that lead to wrong GST calculations.

!

Subtracting Percentage Instead of Using Division

Wrong: Rs 11,800 - 18% = Rs 11,800 - 2,124 = Rs 9,676 (incorrect)
Right: Rs 11,800 / 1.18 = Rs 10,000 (correct)
Subtracting a percentage from the inclusive price gives the wrong answer because the percentage is calculated on the base, not the total.

!

Using Wrong GST Rate

Different products have different GST rates. Using 18% on a product that falls under 12% or 28% gives wrong results. Always verify the correct rate for your specific product or service.

!

Confusing Intra-State with Inter-State

Intra-state = CGST + SGST (split equally). Inter-state = IGST (full rate). Using the wrong tax type means the CGST/SGST values will be wrong, which affects your tax filings.

Best Practices

Tips for accurate GST calculations every time.

01

Always Verify the GST Rate

Before calculating, confirm the correct GST rate for your product. Check the GST Council notifications or use the GST rate finder on gst.gov.in. Rates change periodically.

02

Determine Intra vs Inter-State Correctly

The tax type depends on the location of the supplier and the place of supply. If both are in the same state, use CGST+SGST. If different, use IGST.

03

Round to Two Decimal Places

GST amounts should be rounded to two decimal places (paise). The AFFLIGO calculator does this automatically. If calculating manually, round the final GST amount, not intermediate values.

04

Verify Your Calculation

After calculating, reverse-check your result. If you added GST, remove it from the total to see if you get back the original amount. If you removed GST, add it back to verify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common GST calculation questions answered.

What is the formula to add GST?

GST Amount = Base Amount x GST Rate / 100. Total = Base Amount + GST Amount. For example, on Rs 1000 at 18%: GST = Rs 180, Total = Rs 1180.

How do I remove GST from a price?

Base Amount = GST-Inclusive Price / (1 + GST Rate/100). GST Amount = Inclusive Price - Base Amount. For example, Rs 1180 at 18%: Base = Rs 1000, GST = Rs 180.

What is the difference between CGST and SGST?

CGST goes to the Central Government. SGST goes to the State Government. For intra-state transactions, total GST is split equally: CGST = 50%, SGST = 50%.

What is IGST?

IGST applies to inter-state transactions. The full GST rate is charged as IGST instead of being split into CGST and SGST.

What are the current GST rates in India?

Four main slabs: 5% (essential goods), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most goods and services), 28% (luxury items). Some items are exempt (0% GST).

Is the GST calculator accurate?

Yes. It uses standard GST formulas. Add: GST = Amount x Rate/100. Remove: Base = Amount / (1 + Rate/100). Results rounded to two decimal places.

Is my data private?

Yes. All calculations happen in your browser. No data is sent anywhere. Your financial information stays completely private.
